Fuck it, I totally do. I’m sick of everyone who voted for him in ‘08 complaining about how “disappointed” they are. Guess what? He’s a real human, not a magician or a unicorn or a marketing campaign about dreams. Did he live up to everything he said on the campaign trail? No. Does any politician? I’m not American and I don’t actually know that much about politics, but Barack Obama seems like a pretty decent guy and that’s more than I can say for any of the others and for most of our lot.

I am proud and honored that the first president I vote for will be Barack fucking Obama. Because he is a decent, intelligent, moral man. Because I trust him to act in the nation’s best interests, whether I agree with those actions or not. Because he can prove all the ignoramuses wrong.

I talk as a foreing watcher who tries to keep herself informed about the own government and the others’… Obama took some courageous actions and maybe did something wrong BUT he’s the best thing that could happens to a nation in those times of crisis, in my opinion. Do you really want to vote any of the Republicans because Obama disappointed you? Why he disappointed you? Because he can’t go “abracadabra” and change everything in better with a snap of his fingers? Really? We are in the 2012, can you accept to jump into the past with a single wrong vote for those lobbyists bigots of Republicans?

Please, don’t be crazy and vote for Barak Obama AGAIN, dammit!

On Kony 2012: I honestly wanted to stay as far away as possible from KONY 2012, the latest fauxtivist fad sweeping the web (remember “change your Facebook profile pic to stop child abuse”?), but you clearly won’t stop sending me that damn video until I say something about it, so here goes:

Stop sending me that video.

The organization behind Kony 2012 — Invisible Children Inc. — is an extremely shady nonprofit that has been called ”misleading,” “naive,” and “dangerous” by a Yale political science professor, and has been accused by Foreign Affairs of “manipulat[ing] facts for strategic purposes.” They have also been criticized by the Better Business Bureau for refusing to provide information necessary to determine if IC meets the Bureau’s standards.

Additionally, IC has a low two-star rating in accountability from Charity Navigator because they won’t let their financials be independently audited. That’s not a good thing. In fact, it’s a very bad thing, and should make you immediately pause and reflect on where the money you’re sending them is going.

By IC’s own admission, only 31% of all the funds they receive go toward actually helping anyone [pdf]. The rest go to line the pockets of the three people in charge of the organization, to pay for their travel expenses (over $1 million in the last year alone) and to fund their filmmaking business (also over a million) — which is quite an effective way to make more money, as clearly illustrated by the fact that so many can’t seem to stop forwarding their well-engineered emotional blackmail to everyone they’ve ever known.

And as far as what they do with that money:

The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces. Here’s a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission. These books each refer to the rape and sexual assault that are perennial issues with the UPDF, the military group Invisible Children is defending.

Let’s not get our lines crossed: The Lord’s Resistance Army is bad news. And Joseph Kony is a very bad man, and needs to be stopped. But propping up Uganda’s decades-old dictatorship and its military arm, which has been accused by the UN of committing unspeakable atrocities and itself facilitated the recruitment of child soldiers, is not the way to go about it.

The United States is already plenty involved in helping rout Kony and his band of psycho sycophants. Kony is on the run, having been pushed out of Uganda, and it’s likely he will soon be caught, if he isn’t already dead. But killing Kony won’t fix anything, just as killing Osama bin Laden didn’t end terrorism. The LRA might collapse, but, as Foreign Affairs points out, it is “a relatively small player in all of this — as much a symptom as a cause of the endemic violence.”

Myopically placing the blame for all of central Africa’s woes on Kony — even as a starting point — will only imperil many more people than are already in danger.

Sending money to a nonprofit that wants to muck things up by dousing the flames with fuel is not helping. Want to help? Really want to help? Send your money to nonprofits that are putting more than 31% toward rebuilding the region’s medical and educational infrastructure, so that former child soldiers have something worth coming home to.

Here are just a few of those charities. They all have a sparkling four-star rating from Charity Navigator, and, more importantly, no interest in airdropping American troops armed to the teeth into the middle of a multi-nation tribal war to help one madman catch another.

The bottom line is, research your causes thoroughly. Don’t just forward a random video to a stranger because a mass murderer makes a five-year-old “sad.” Learn a little bit about the complexities of the region’s ongoing strife before advocating for direct military intervention.

There is no black and white in the world. And going about solving important problems like there is just serves to make all those equally troubling shades of gray invisible.

• Two-thirds of the world’s children who receive less than four years of education are girls. Girls represent nearly 60% of the children not in school.
• Parents in countries such as China and India sometimes use sex determination tests to find out if their fetus is a girl. Of 8,000 fetuses aborted at a Bombay clinic, 7,999 were female.
• Wars today affect civilians most, since they are civil wars, guerrilla actions and ethnic disputes over territory or government. 3 out of 4 fatalities of war are women and children.
• Rape is consciously used as a tool of genocide and weapon of war. Tens of thousands of women and girls have been subjected to rape and other sexual violence since the crisis erupted in Darfur in 2003. There is no evidence of anyone being convicted in Darfur for these atrocities.
• About 75% of the refugees and internally displaced in the world are women who have lost their families and their homes.
• Gender-based violence kills one in three women across the world and is the biggest cause of injury and death to women worldwide, causing more deaths and disability among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria, traffic accident, and war.

The problem is that he does scream.

Mostly at night.  In his sleep.  He wakes himself up with it and the next day, Mrs. Hudson will find some reason to stop in.  Pop her head in with a pot of tea or some wicker basket of something that smells delicious.  John knows he should be grateful, but the thought of food turns his stomach.

He lives mostly on tea.  And the pack of cigarettes.

The last pack Sherlock ever bought.  He had stolen it from Sherlock and hidden it under the ugly tea cozy.  He never understood why Sherlock could never find them.

He lives on tea and cigarettes, but never all at once.

He smokes the cigarettes slowly.  Or as slowly as he can.  The smoke burns his throat and he always feels sick afterwards.  But he can’t quite bring himself to stop.  He smokes on the fire escape, drinking lukewarm tea and texting Sherlock.

John never smokes more than one at a time, but on the fire escape, staring out at the blank walls of the neighboring buildings, he flicks the lighter and takes a drag from another one.

just realized why the living room always smelled like smoke in the mornings.

A kid rides his bike up the alley and dismounts, dropping his bag on the ground.  He surveys the wall and then the area around him.  His eyes land on John and he seems to consider him a moment before turning back to the wall.  Leaning down, the kid pulls out two cans of spray paint.  And starts working.  John thinks it’s pretty gutsy of him to be doing that in broad daylight.

He texts as much to Sherlock and takes another drag from the cigarette, staring at the smoke the curls up into the gray London sky.

John Watson is living on tea, nicotine and texts.  

It’s not really living.

He ashes the half finished cigarette and dumps the tea over the edge of the fire escape with reckless determination.  He manages to make it all the way down the stairs before he realizes he’s texting.

The text is sent half finished.  John sits down on the last step and stares at the door.  He’s still there when Mrs. Hudson comes in.

Outside, the kid with the paint tosses the empty cans into his bag, zips it up and rides away.

He manages to convince himself that it’s the right thing to do.

Three years to the day since the death of London’s greatest mind, since the death of the world’s only consulting detective, since the death of the great Sherlock Holmes.

Three years to the day since the death of John Watson’s best friend, and the pain of it has not been dulled by a single passing moment. He is tired. So, so tired.

He looks out over the rooftops, out over London. Below him, the world moves on, takes no notice the small figure standing on the ledge of Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital.

Three years, to the day. It’s oddly poetic, if he were inclined to such sentiments. He tells himself that he’s doing what’s best – he hasn’t been the same since Sherlock died, hasn’t laughed and hardly ever smiles. Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson tried, at first. He’d invite John out for a pint, she’d bring him tea in the mornings.

Nothing helped. Eventually they got the message.

John moved out of Baker Street two months later. Found himself a small flat he was able to afford on his army pension and whatever money he managed to make at the surgery, on the days he decided to show up.

Sarah was understanding. She put up with him longer than he could have asked for.

Now he’s jobless. Nearly homeless. Living off of tea and crap telly to numb his mind. No one to miss him because he’s pushed everyone away and the only person who really mattered, John buried three years before.

He tells himself it’s the right thing to do. Sherlock wouldn’t have wanted him to, but Sherlock’s not there to tell him so. That’s the problem.

On the street below, no one takes notice of the man on the roof who spreads his arms wide, feeling the breeze telling of distant rain whisper against his exposed skin. He looks down – it doesn’t seem so far, I wonder if this is what he felt like, maybe I can ask him soon – takes a deep breath.

John Watson closes his eyes. Leans forward. Feels himself begin to fall-

-is violently snatched from behind, strong arms curling around his chest, yanking him back.

His savior doesn’t let go when they tumble backwards, landing hard on the building below them. John breathes deeply, evenly through his nose, does not open his eyes. The feel of those arms around his chest is oddly comforting, the scratch of wool on his cheek distracting, the scent of tea and unidentifiable chemicals familiar…

John opens his eyes, sees nothing but the sky thinly veiled by clouds. The arms around him remove themselves. His savior shifts.

Suddenly the sky is replaced by two pale eyes, half-lidded and grieving.

“You were going to jump after me,” Sherlock says. It’s the first time John can remember hearing the great detective say something so obvious.
